Beginning in 1970 a start was made with the construction of the eastern part of the subway, the East Line.
For the construction of the 3.5 kilometer long underground pipe much of the Nieuwmarktbuurt had to be scrapped, even a large part of the Waterloo fell victim to the wrecking ball. This was because they built above ground, with large concrete caissons had to be sunk. During the construction of the subway wandered the market around the pits.
